Warning: Indoor Plants May Cause Better Health and Happier Spaces

When we think about improving our homes or workplaces, we often focus on furniture, lighting, or paint colors. While these elements shape how a space looks, it's often the living elements—plants, natural materials, water, and daylight—that shape how a space feels. At Sky Island Design Co., our mission is built around reconnecting people with nature by creating environments that feel alive. Research continues to show that incorporating nature into our everyday surroundings can reduce stress, improve focus, support productivity, and enhance overall well-being. We believe every space has the potential to become healthier, more inspiring, and more connected to the natural world.

The benefits of surrounding ourselves with nature are supported by decades of scientific research. One of the most influential studies, conducted by researcher Roger Ulrich, found that hospital patients recovering from surgery who had a view of trees experienced shorter hospital stays, required less pain medication, and received fewer negative evaluations from nurses compared to patients whose windows faced a brick wall. Similar findings have been observed in workplaces. Researchers at the University of Exeter discovered that introducing plants into previously sparse office environments increased productivity by approximately 15 percent while also improving employee satisfaction and engagement. Nature is not simply decoration—it actively contributes to healthier and more productive environments.

Nature also has a remarkable ability to restore our minds. Studies from Chiba University and Japan's Forestry Research Institute on the practice of Shinrin-yoku, or "forest bathing," found that time spent in forest environments lowered cortisol levels, reduced blood pressure and heart rate, and promoted the body's natural rest-and-recovery response. Researchers at the University of Michigan have shown that spending time in nature improves attention and memory by allowing our minds to recover from mental fatigue, while a University of Vermont study found that people expressed significantly higher levels of happiness while visiting urban parks. Even moving water plays an important role, gently capturing our attention in a way that allows the brain to relax without becoming overstimulated.

These findings reinforce a philosophy that extends beyond simply adding more plants to a room. Thoughtful biophilic design looks at every space as an opportunity to support both people and nature. Blank walls can become living gardens. Underused corners can house thriving plant collections. Landscapes can provide shade, support pollinators, capture rainwater, improve air quality, and even produce food. Rather than asking how much space we have, we ask how much life that space can support. Every design decision becomes an opportunity to strengthen our connection with the natural systems that sustain us.

At Sky Island Design Co., we believe beautiful spaces should do more than look good—they should improve the way we live. Whether it's caring for a single houseplant, designing an office filled with greenery, creating a living wall, or transforming an overlooked landscape into a thriving ecosystem, our goal is always the same: to bring life back into the places where people spend their time. Nature doesn't ask for perfection—only partnership, and we're here to help build that connection one space at a time.
